The installation The Importance of Laughter, With a Totally Straight Face is based on a text quote found in the local news of Langenthal, Switzerland, where the biannual event Designers’ Saturday takes place. The article discusses the importance of laughter in a peculiar speech by Swiss politician Johann Schneider-Ammann that gained worldwide attention due to the dismay between its message and its messenger.

In the installation at Designers’ Saturday this fragment of daily news is mirrored with equivalents from the arts, design and architecture, and as such attempts to convey an edited view on reality. A website extension and a selection of projects relating to the article are shown, dealing with amongst others identity politics, facial expression, digital personification of people and healthcare.
